Connections
See visitors live
You need both scripts, and they do different jobs
The first one lives in your theme and sees your shop. The second lives in Shopify’s customer events and sees the checkout — because Shopify runs the checkout on its own pages, where your theme never loads. Install only the first and Live will show you everything except the moment people pay.
Step one: generate your token
Open the tracking card
In Shopdeck: Setup, then scroll to the last card, Live visitor tracking. Or go straight to app.shopdeck.io/setup?service=tracking.
Press Generate token
The button says Generate token the first time and Generate new token afterwards. Press it once. A long value appears, in the shape of an identifier, a dot, and 32 more characters.
Generating a new one breaks the old
If you already have the scripts installed and you press this again, the scripts in your shop stop working immediately and Live goes quiet. You then have to paste both of them again with the new token. Only press it if you mean to.
This token ends up in your shop’s page source, so it is not a secret in the way an API key is. It only lets a browser send visit events to your workspace; it cannot read anything back.
Step two: the script in your theme
Copy it from Setup, do not retype it
Right below the token, under 1. Storefront snippet, is the line with a copy button. It already has your token in it. It looks like this:
Do not use this one — copy yours from Setup<script src="https://app.shopdeck.io/api/profit/track.js?token=YOUR-TOKEN" defer="defer"></script>Open your theme's code
Online StoreThemes… beside CustomizeEdit codeMake sure it is the theme marked as live, not an older one sitting underneath it.
Duplicate your theme first if you are nervous
On the same … menu there is Duplicate. Editing the copy and publishing it when you are happy is the safe route. Adding one script line is a very small change, but it is your shop.
Find theme.liquid
In the file list on the left, under Layout, click theme.liquid. Near the top of the file you will find a line that reads exactly:
Search for this line</head>Use Ctrl+F (or Cmd+F) inside the editor if you cannot see it — it is usually somewhere between line 40 and line 120.
Paste the line just above it
Put your cursor at the start of the </head> line, press Enter to make an empty line above it, and paste. The result should read:
How it should look<script src="https://app.shopdeck.io/api/profit/track.js?token=YOUR-TOKEN" defer="defer"></script> </head>Press Save at the top right.
Step three: the checkout script
Copy it from Setup
Back on the tracking card, under 2. Checkout pixel, is a second copy button. This one is a longer block of code. Copy the whole thing.
Open Customer events in Shopify
SettingsCustomer eventsAdd custom pixelName it and set two dropdowns
Give it any name — Shopdeck live is fine. Then, before pasting anything, set:
- Permission → Not required
- Data sale → Data collected does not qualify as data sale
Why those two settings
The script stores nothing personal, so those are the honest answers. They also matter practically: on Required, Shopify only runs it for shoppers who accepted marketing cookies, which means your checkout numbers would be missing a large slice of real buyers.
Paste, save, connect
Replace everything already in the code box with what you copied. Press Save, then Connect. It is not live until you press Connect.
Already running a pixel for another dashboard? Leave it. Add this one beside it, and both keep measuring, so you can compare before you switch anything off.
Checking that it works
Open your own shop in a normal tab
Visit your storefront, click on a product, add something to the basket.
Open the Live page in Shopdeck
Profit Dashboard → Live. Within a few seconds you should see yourself: one visitor, a country, the page you are on, and your basket count.
You are done when
If you see yourself appear, walk from one page to another, and disappear when you close the tab — the theme script is right. Reach the checkout and see In checkout tick up, and the second script is right too.
What it does and does not see
Worth knowing, both for your own peace of mind and for answering a customer who asks.
- It sees: which page somebody is on, the product title on a product page, how many items are in the basket, when they add or remove one, when they head for the checkout, and which country the request came from.
- It never sees: names, email addresses, postal addresses, payment details. Not from the shop, and not from the checkout.
- It stores one thing in the browser: a random identifier, so the same person is not counted twice while they walk from page to page. No third party ever receives it.
- It ignores bots. Crawlers, uptime monitors and automated browsers are recognised and skipped, which is why the Live page shows a separate bots not counted figure.
- It talks to nobody but Shopdeck. No advertising network, no analytics provider.
When it does not work
Nobody ever shows up on Live, not even you
Why: The script is not on the page, or the token is wrong.
Fix: Open your shop, right-click, View page source, and search for track.js. If it is not there, the paste did not save or you edited a theme that is not the live one. If it is there, open the browser console and type window.__mrvLive — a number means the script loaded and is running.
Visitors show up but the checkout is always empty
Why: The second script — the customer events pixel — was not added or not connected.
Fix: Go back to Settings → Customer events in Shopify and confirm the pixel is there and says connected.
It worked, then stopped one day
Why: Almost always: somebody pressed Generate new token in Setup, or the theme was replaced by a new one that does not carry the line.
Fix: Copy the snippet from Setup again — it always carries the current token — and paste it into the theme that is actually live now.
Numbers on Live look lower than in Shopify's own analytics
Why: Different measurements. Shopdeck counts what its own script saw; Shopify counts sessions its way. They are never identical and neither is broken.
Fix: Compare Shopdeck to itself over time rather than to Shopify. For money, trust the order figures, which come straight from Shopify.

Now that Live has data, The Live page explains every number on it — and there are three counters there that look interchangeable and are not.
